DeKalb man charged with burglary and attempted rape of cell phone store employee – Shaw Local

DeKALB – A DeKalb man faces burglary and sexual assault charges after police say he attacked a female employee working at a Boost Mobile store this week and attempted to rape her.

Donald L. Young Jr. of the 800 block of North Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb is charged with attempted aggravated felony sexual assault, burglary and felony sexual abuse in the May 17 incident, court records show. of DeKalb County.

Young appeared for a bail hearing Thursday before DeKalb County Chief Judge Bradley Waller and was represented by public defender Chip Criswell.

DeKalb County Assistant District Attorney Suzanne Collins asked Waller to set Young Jr.’s bail at $50,000, citing the violent nature of the allegations and a 2018 felony charge of assault and battery. She said most of the incident was captured on the store’s surveillance camera footage. Young Jr. was not convicted in that misdemeanor case, records show.

“It was a terrifying moment for this store clerk,” Collins said. “The defendant took advantage of her when she was alone. … I believe, given the nature of this offence, that this is not the first time this defendant has done something like this.

Criswell instead requested Young Jr.’s release on bail.

“While I understand the state’s concerns for public safety, we’re talking about four years ago on this, Judge,” Criswell said.

Waller sets bail at $50,000. Young Jr. would need to deposit $5,000 to be released from jail. In his decision, Waller said he weighed the dangers to the public if Young Jr. were to be released amid the allegations.

“I have some concerns … about the safety of members of the general public,” Waller said. “It seems to me that it is appropriate to set a deposit.”

According to court records, police responded to a Boost Mobile store in the 900 block of Lucinda Avenue on Tuesday for reports of an attempted rape after the victim, a woman who was an employee of the store, called 911.

When police arrived, the woman reported working when a man, later identified as Young Jr., entered the store three times within several minutes, records show. The third time he pulled his genitals out of his pants and allegedly attacked the woman in the back room behind the employee counter, records show.

The woman told police that Young Jr. pushed her and tried to fight back, but he held her back, records show. According to records, Young Jr. tried to lift her skirt and then rape her.

The woman suffered two cuts to her right hand, she told police, and was eventually able to fight off Young Jr., who fled the store, records show.

DeKalb police arrested Young Jr. at his home in the 800 block of North Annie Glidden Road, according to court documents. In a police interview, Young Jr. allegedly admitted to being at Boost Mobile, attacking the woman and exposing her genitals, records show.

Young Jr. is scheduled to appear for a status hearing at 2:30 p.m. on May 25.
